Hey Moguls – Jason Lucchesi here. It’s been a while since I’ve been on Mogul with you, so let me refresh your memory with a few bits of information about me and my REI experience.
I’ve always been fascinated with all things that have to do with real estate and I’ve been active in this industry since 2002. I actually got my start as a loan officer for an Illinois brokerage firm. Then a couple years later, I joined the management team at Countrywide Home Loans. Even though I was successful in these venues, my highest desire was to have my own business and become independent.
So in 2008, I took that leap and founded my real estate investing company, Global Fortune Solutions. So, here I am, still pursuing my dreams and sharing some (hopefully) helpful REI info with you.
Ya know, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about motivation and how it affects all that we do (or fail to do). I see investors who have SO much potential but are simply not motivated. They seem to be stuck in a rut. As the saying goes…
“If it’s important to you, you will find a way; if not, you will find an excuse.”
The Young Man and the Guru
Years ago, I heard a story that changed how I thought about motivation. In fact, I can still remember how this story pumped me up. It’s a good lesson to share with you Moguls. I hope it’ll inspire you like it did me.
An enterprising young man approached a successful business guru and said, “I want to be successful and be on the same level you are.”
The guru answered, “If you want to be on the same level I’m on, I’ll meet you tomorrow at the beach at 4 am.”
The young man scoffed. “I want to become a success; I don’t want to go for a swim.”
“If you want to be a success and be on the same level I’m on, be at the beach at 4 am.”
The young man showed up at the beach at 4 am the next morning. The guru grabbed him and said, “So, you want to be a success. Just how bad do you want it?”
“I want it real bad.”
“Real bad? Okay, come with me.” The guru began pulling the young man out into the water until they stood waist deep.
The young man said, “I just want to make money. I didn’t ask to be a lifeguard.”
The guru said, “Come out a little farther.”
Now the young man is thinking, ‘This man may be successful, but he’s crazy.’
All of a sudden the guru grabbed him by the back of the neck and pushed his head under the water and held him there –for quite some time. When the young man came up thrashing and gasping, the guru said: “Now I have a question for you. When you were under water what did you want?”
“I wanted air. I wanted to breathe.”
“That’s it! When you get to the point that you want to be successful as much as you wanted that breath of air, then you’ll be successful. You say you want to be successful, but you don’t want it bad enough. You just kinda want it. You don’t want it more than you want to party. You don’t want it more than you want to be cool. You don’t want it as much as you want to sleep. I’m here to tell you that if you want to be successful, you’ve got to be willing to give up sleep. If you really want to be successful, you have to want it more than anything else in your life.”
The Core Truth
While I realize all things in life have to be in balance, still and yet, the core truth of this story holds true…
In order to see your dreams and visions come to fruition, in order for you to become all that you dream of becoming - you truly DO have to WANT it as much as a drowning man wants a breath of air.
I encourage you to think about this story the next time you’re tempted to throw in the towel and quit… or feel down on yourself because maybe you haven’t reached the level of success you’d hoped to.
“When you feel like quitting; think about why you started.”
What Motivates and Inspires You?
I’d love to hear about your motivation and inspiration in the comments section below.
Know what you want; know how you’re going to get there.
Create a functional, workable list of goals.
Keep that list of goals in full view and review it each morning.
Continually assess your level of motivation – how bad do you want it?
