Hey Moguls, Andrew “The Maestro” Massaro here…
What I’m going to share today doesn’t directly apply to real estate in one sense, but in another sense, it does apply not only to your real estate investing endeavors but your whole freakin’ life, in every way. So the application should be self-evident.
We’re gonna talk about 3 of the most powerful words in the English language. When you really truly understand what they mean and how to use them, you can extract real power from them that can change everything in your life. These are words that we commonly use in our everyday language without really considering their potency. So I want to take a minute and really focus in on the power that lies within each of these 3 words and so you can begin to tap into that as entrepreneurs and human beings.
I’m talking about appreciation, gratitude and abundance.
I know, I know – all this was deep for me, too. But those words are powerful. So I’m here today to recommend – no - to challenge you to understand these words, to think about them, to consider them and to practice programming your mind to express these feelings of appreciation and gratitude, to feel them – like deep down in your core – and to truly grasp the meaning of abundance in terms of quality over quantity.
Appreciation
Let’s first tackle the concept of appreciation. We say it all the time, because it’s often the right thing to say. “I appreciate you” or “I appreciate that.” That’s what I call blowing smoke. I want you to think about appreciation as being equal to love, which is the most powerful choice (yes, I said choice, not emotion) you can make.
Someone wise (and I’ll be sure to let you know who that is when I find out) once said that everything we say, feel and do comes from either love or fear. And I’ll be damned if that doesn’t make perfect sense to me. So what if you decide to choose love? What happens then?
Lots and lots of good stuff. That’s what happens. Life turns around. The sun shines a little brighter. Food tastes better. Business grows. All that warm and fuzzy awesomeness happens.
Gratitude
This one is BIG. You’ve heard the expression “stop and smell the roses,” and I think this saying has more than one meaning. To me, that means take time to enjoy life AND make sure you are approaching life with an attitude of gratitude. Be aware of all the good around you and be thankful for it.
A colleague of mine talks about this subject and I really like what he has to say – it resonates with me, and it probably will with you too – personally and professionally. He says that when people have a sense of gratitude, they are regularly aware of all the good that life can bring. When they’re successful and enjoy what comes with those successes, they seek out more success. And, if something doesn’t work out well, grateful people can learn from it and move on. So it’s uber important to be aware of the good and feel gratitude.
At the same time, you should be aware of the bad around you too. After all, you learn from the bad stuff too, right? You grow from mistakes and you learn what not to do and who not to be from the negative junk around you. Being around negative people, for example, can make you be more negative. My colleague also says that people who don’t have gratitude aren’t really happy. They don’t enjoy successes, and when they fail, it puts them down in the dumps and discouraged.
So it’s clear that feeling more gratitude is what we should we aim for. But how? Well, practice. Here’s how he does it… every night he writes down everything that day that created a positive emotion – in himself or others around him.
-
Did you give a colleague some positive feedback?
-
Did you hold the door for a stranger and they thanked you with a smile?
-
Did you help a friend find a solution to a problem?
-
Did you pass by some little ducks waddling behind their mama duck and it made you chuckle?
-
Did you have all green lights while out driving?
Write them all down.
What does it do? By reviewing and writing down all those good things, you are ‘training your brain’ to see your daily activities in a positive light. Focus mentally on the good and let go of the not so good. You’ll sleep better and wake up ready to take on the next day – with positivity.
Sure, we all have bad days, maybe even a whole yucky week. But this exercise helps you discover that even on bad days – there is still good. And you’re training your brain to notice good reasons to feel gratitude.
Abundance
Okay, I’ll admit it. I like money. I want money. Who doesn’t?
But I’m wise enough to know that I’m a “richer” man for having quality people, love, health and a job I love in my life rather than more Benjamins I can bank.
Take Mother Theresa, for example. Now there’s a true superwoman. She didn’t have a penny to her name, but she traveled the world without spending a dime, and she raised more money for her cause than any of us will see in a lifetime. She was dedicated to people - to something bigger than money, and she led one of the richest lives in history.
Practice the Power of 3
Stop whatever you’re doing and look around you, right now. Put the remote down, get off the couch and appreciate the world around you.
Show gratitude for the things you have and the people who care about you. Realize the abundance in your life and change your mindset to focus on goals bigger than money.
Now watch your world change for the better.
Chime In
Do you live a life of gratitude and appreciation while keeping ‘abundance’ in check? Tell us about it in the comments section below.
Appreciate all you have, all you can do and the good around you.
Show gratitude daily.
Realize that abundance counts in quality, not quantity.
Embrace even the bad around you as lessons learned.
