Are Your Hindering Your Own Freedom?

freedomI had a great 4th of July a few weeks ago, and I’m still feeling the power of that special holiday. Specifically – our freedom.

Deep down in our core, one of our greatest desires is to be free. This is something that drove our founding fathers to take up arms and to fight for freedom, not only for them, but also for us.

That same desire that drove them to great things still exists in us today. We get offended if we feel that someone is taking away our freedoms, and we’re appalled to see someone taking the freedoms of another away.

Trampling on someone’s freedom is not right and we just don’t like it.

The freedoms that our founding fathers fought for have given all of us in the United States opportunities that few others in the world will ever get to experience. But I can’t help but be saddened at how we have lost our way.

Shaun McCloskey here and I’m not talking about someone else taking our freedoms away, instead I’m thinking about how we as individuals are trampling our own freedoms. And it’s my hope that today we will all take a stand and declare our independence and choose to be free.

Dream On

The American Dream is one of the greatest visions ever laid out. It’s a powerful vision, and it has made this nation great.

But something has changed.

The American Dream, as defined by James Truslow Adams in 1931 and adapted from the Declaration of Independence stated that:

“Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.”

This vision was embraced by a nation and made us great. But it has changed. If you ask people what the American Dream is today, most do not know it’s original meaning. Instead, they will tell you that it is to have a home with a white picket fence, 2 cars, 2.5 kids and a college education.

happinessIt’s still a wonderful dream, but the cost of pursuing this dream has robbed many Americans of the freedom that allowed them to pursue it. In this day and time, most Americans want freedom more than anything, which seems ironic in what is supposed to be known as the Land of the Free.

We’ve traded our freedoms for a distorted dream, a costly lifestyle that requires our devotion and service to it.

Live Life

I’m not suggesting that all is bad in this lifestyle, but the percentage of people ages 20-60 in the United States who are free to do what they want to do with their lives is shrinking every day.

Instead, this age group finds themselves indebted to a lifestyle, one that dictates how they live their lives.

If you find yourself in this position, let me encourage you to remember what Independence Day was all about, and to further encourage you to take a stand in your life and to get your freedom back.

Don’t ever throw away the freedoms you have or forget how precious this freedom truly is.

Millions of men and women have given their lives so you could have the freedom to live life.

So live life, don’t serve a lifestyle!
