How You and Your Team Can Stay Mentally Strong

What’s keeping your team from reaching their potential?

Hey Moguls, Chris Clothier here…

Whether you’re leading a new team or a team managing billions in real estate assets after years of hard work, your team’s work is never done. And you need a mentally tough team that is constantly setting new goals and improving.

Want to know more about the mental toughness of entrepreneurs? Then read about the mental strength that leads to success from my previous lesson.

Now on to building an avengers-worthy team of mentally fit players…

Consistency Is Key

You have to be consistent. You need a regimen you follow daily, weekly and monthly.

In certain seasons, this consistency is really challenging. But it’s so critical because the people working with you expect you to bring it. Every. Single. Day.

No matter what level of leadership you have, people are watching, and they’re expecting you to set the example.

They will notice if you aren’t consistent or take your foot off the gas. It takes mental toughness to bring your all as part of your team every day.

That kind of leadership can look different for different people. You always want to treat people the way you want to be treated, but get comfortable with your own leadership style. The end goal is always the same—get the job done.

Some leadership styles might be more vocal, yelling to get a point across... younger leaders are more likely to act this way. With time, you’re able to rely on experience in your leadership.

Both approaches take mental toughness: keeping the end goal in mind, drawing connections to past situations, relying on experience. And leaders are mentally tough when they learn from experiences and use that to change what happens next.

Never Be Satisfied

A mentally strong team never rests on their success. They’re always gritting it out to get to another level.

There’s always more that we can do. Investors can learn from Navy SEALs, who go through an unbelievable physical and mental regimen to get to the next level that will get them through training.

We need that kind of mentality.

Never quit.

Never give up.

teamworkKeep in mind that you shouldn’t worry about your competition. If you exceed your own expectations, you don’t need to worry about what anyone else is doing. And that’s mental toughness right there.

You already know you perform at a higher level than they do. You set your standards higher than any of your competition. That’s confidence—that’s mental toughness.

And mental toughness isn’t just for leaders. You should expect great things from your team and set the example of the highest standard of excellence.

Build a Winning Team

As you succeed, your team grows. And it’s not easy to find a team with the same level of intensity and drive that you have. It takes a lot of effort to keep a business organized and set up leadership that keeps the whole organization energized.

It starts with hiring:

  • Look for a certain type of person
  • Set expectations and clear responsibilities
  • Hold team members accountable
  • Look for mentally tough people who can handle the challenges of working with your company
  • Hire people who are above average

Then in the everyday operation, keep your team hungry to keep improving. Every year, measure your successes and challenge your team to do even better.

That kind of leadership—that kind of team—needs real mental toughness, to always keep climbing that mountain and reach those milestones together.

Expect Hard Work—and Success

Remember as an entrepreneur there are no free lunches. Being an entrepreneur is hard, and it’s not an 8 to 5 job. This is a grind every single day. If you bring it every single day and you put in the work, then you will see the results.

When you work hard enough, good things are going to happen.

I’m a pretty good example of that...

I’m not the smartest guy in the room by far, but I’ve always worked hard and brought my A-game every day. I read and learn everything I can. I listen to leaders and to my team.

So bring it every day. Do your homework, make a plan and stick to it. And never quit. Eventually you will find success.
