Hey Moguls, JP Moses here…
Today we are going to learn from one of the most influential teachers of all time to apply life’s principles to real estate investing. Someone I admire and look up to... someone who I mentally place on a pedestal. I am talking about the great and powerful Yoda (of course, who else?).
You guys know I have always reflected a special connection to when it comes to Jedi forces. Well, the other day I came across this article that made me contemplate how Yoda’s lessons are not only universal, but they also apply to real estate investing.
So I thought I would be a good Jedi and pass on what I have learned…
REI Jedi Lesson #1
“Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.”
~Yoda
Fear of loss is one of the most paralyzing things if you let it be. It can stop you dead in your tracks and keep you from having experiences you need to move forward. This fear can misdirect you from things that you need to be doing or should not do.
Let me give you an example:
If you’re scared you’re going to miss out and think you have to make a deal out of every deal, then you will end up stepping over dimes to pick-up nickels. There are deals that you need to pass-up just because they aren’t good deals. If you aren’t terrified of losing a deal or desperate to make one, then you aren’t going to make smart decisions. In the end you are going to miss out on opportunity and money.
If you are afraid of losing your earnest money, then that will make you scared to pull the trigger and make offers. You have got to take the risk of putting down earnest money sometimes. If you’re terrified that turning down a deal is going to cause you the loss of an opportunity, then you will be unfocused, watered down and basically all over the map trying to get every type of real estate deal that you can possibly do.
You have to let go of the fear of losing. When you do, you’ll realize it’s not as bad as you thought. All successful people lose at one point or another. It’s just part of the process of success. The challenge is:
Are you ready to lose something at the risk of gaining so much more?
You have to train yourself to get over the fear of loss and learn to take some risks in order to ultimately succeed in real estate investing.
REI Jedi Lesson #2
“Patience you must have, my young padawan.”
~Yoda
The fact is most REI success stories don't happen overnight. You will hear many stories that glorify investing and make it sound super easy and sexy, but that’s just not how it happens in most cases. For most successful investors, it’s a process that takes years of trial, error and diligence through a steady application and a lot of patience.
REI Jedi Lesson #3
“You must unlearn what you have learned.”
~Yoda
If you are going to be in this business, then most of the people you know won't understand you and why you are willing to take risks. The education in our country actually works against us. It trains us to fall in line and work for a big company. It trains us to conform. We are trained to throw in all our chips on corporate America.
Unfortunately, in order to win at the REI game you are going to have to be countercultural. Most people aren’t going to understand traditional "education" is working against you. You've been programmed to walk in line with everyone else, get a "safe," regular job, earn a pension and not take risks. Most of us would rather “be safe than sorry.”
You've got to actively deprogram, then reprogram yourself. Is it worth it? YES!
REI Jedi Lesson #4
“If no mistake have you made, yet losing you are, a different game you should play.”
~Yoda
If you are doing everything right and playing by the rules and still not winning the game, then maybe you’re in the wrong game and need a to start a new one.
If you have been trying to rehab houses and it’s just not working out and you’ve been consistent, maybe you should buy and hold. Or if you aren’t getting all the deals you want right off, get involved locally and start co-wholesaling.
If you have truly put your all into it, given it time, and if it’s still not panning out, maybe you’re in the wrong playing field and you’re supposed to be in the next one over.
REI Jedi Lesson #5
“Control, control, you must learn control!”
~Yoda
You can’t just jump in and expect to be successful. It takes developing a skill. Choose your craft, then master it.
Real estate investing is your craft, but master it. Choose your niche and master it.
Practice makes perfect. The top performers are always practicing and have a never-ending hunger for growth.
REI Jedi Lesson #6
“Always pass on what you have learned.”
~Yoda
Every heard of the giver’s gain philosophy? I have found that the more you give the more you receive. Always have a giver's gain philosophy instead of a scarcity mindset.
There's immense fulfillment in pouring into people and building others up.
REI Jedi Lesson #7
“Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.”
~Yoda
You can’t tell what’s going to happen in the future. Don't let fear (of any kind) of what may happen keep you in analysis paralysis.
The fact is you'll never feel like you truly know enough. You just have to act anyway, in faith... that's what winners do.
REI Jedi Lesson #8
“Named must your fear be before banish it you can.”
~Yoda
Most people who fail in REI do so because of the mindset disease that they don't even know they have.
Invest first, foremost and constantly in your inner game... the most valuable piece of real state in the world is those few inches between your ears.
The more you work on your mindset, the more clarity you get… you’ll see what's holding you back so you can reprogram yourself and release yourself from letting it have power over you any longer.
REI Jedi Lesson #9
Luke: I can’t believe it.
Yoda: That is why you fail.
There is nothing in all of humanity quite so powerful as self-belief. Your beliefs affect your focus and your actions... which inevitably dictate your outcomes.
REI Jedi Lesson #10
“Do or do not. There is no try.”
~Yoda
How bad do you want it? Are you willing to make sacrifices to make it happen? Take risks? Are you willing to experience actual failure?
Go all in and all out. Never quit... quitting is the only way you'll fail. Burn the ships behind you if need be.
Yoda’s lessons are simple but powerful and shouldn’t be taken lightly. So go forth, young Jedi, and use the force to conquer the world of investing.
Remember Yoda’s lessons and great you will become.
Realize your fears and conformities and let them go.
Dissolve conformities and retrain your mind.
Believe in yourself and have patience.
GO ALL IN.
Give back to the forces of the universe.
