Hey Moguls, Chris Seder here…
A few years back I had a strange realization: I am an addict.
I know, I know… you’re probably thinking since I am an addict, I must be addicted to the crack pipe or maybe something worse, “women.” (Come on. Laugh, that was funny.)
But that is not the case. I am addicted to real estate and success. For me, it can be a problem but it’s also one of the #1 reasons why I have had a lot of success.
See, when it comes to succeeding in life, business, real estate, relationships… I truly believe you need to be some sort of an addict. Before I really start confusing you, let me explain to you what I consider to be an addict.
Addict definition
Noun:
1. A person who is addicted to an activity, habit, or substance. Example: a real estate addict.
Verb (used with object):
2. To cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on an addictive substance, such as alcohol or a narcotic.
3. To habituate or abandon (oneself) to something compulsively or obsessively.
Now that you see the definition(s)... how do you think this might relate to success in any endeavor you undertaking?
My definition of addict is someone who is overly obsessed with something.
Early on when I got started in real estate investing, I honestly became obsessed. All I thought about was houses, flipping houses, buying houses, meth houses, run-down houses and anything that was involved with real estate.
This caused me to get out and start networking with other addicts at local support groups called REIAs. I found some of these people had the same crazy addiction I had, and it was very easy to talk to them and relate to them.
The fine line between addiction and passion
Pretty much everyone who has ever made a truly huge impact on the world has walked the tightrope between full-blown addict and full-blown obsession.
Your friends and family might call you obsessed and start to distance themselves from you because they think your obsession isn’t okay. Most normal people I know just do not understand, how can someone so crazy about something like real estate?
But when you truly have a passion for something, there is a burning desire deep down – that nothing is going to stop you, nothing is going to get in your way… and you’re going to become the biggest and best you can possibly be.
I bet if you asked those same people who think you’re crazy what they are totally obsessed with and what they could talk about for hours and hours – they would probably say something like golf, fishing, family or some sort of hobby they could get lost in for hours, days, months or even years.
That is the same feeling real estate addicts, like myself, have when thinking about building a successful business.
Do you find yourself dreaming about houses or creative deal structuring or financing options?
Know this…
You do not have to be a full-blown addict in order to have success in real estate. Of course, there are more important things in life than making money and flipping houses.
But if you truly want to get the most out of anything in life you do, you need to give 100%. And, it’s a thousand times easier to give 100% to something you are slightly crazy about.
I hear ya
