We are so darned ‘on demand’ and so overstimulated by instant messages and the satisfaction of instant gratification that we have literally become terrible listeners. We’ve forgotten how to communicate, how to talk to one another and how to genuinely care about what others say.
Our social skills, sadly, are dying.
Some of us don’t even care that others are clearly distracted when we talk. We aren’t phased when people don’t look us in the eye as we speak. We don’t really even care if our friends, family and clients text, listen to voicemails or even send emails while we talk...
How is this possible? We all want to be heard, I mean, truly heard… don’t we?
But the good news is this: Once we know that we aren’t listening, once we recognize that we’ve got some work to do in the listening department, we can make a change.
