4 Traits of Successful AND Happy People

lifeHey Moguls, Steve Cook here…

Does success come naturally? Or is it earned through effort?

Statistically, 87% of affluent people started out in poverty or middle-class. That means that they were able to break out of their 'natural-born' limits and achieve a level of success that was 'un-natural' to them.

If they did it, so can you. But how?

If we can learn to adopt the common traits of successful individuals (and not just those who have obtained financial success but are truly abundant in all areas of their life), then we can learn to produce similar results.

So, in today’s lesson, we’re gonna check out the top 4 traits of successful (and happy!) people.

1. They Surround Themselves with Other Happy and Successful People

It's been said that you are the average of the top 5 people you spend time with -- the average emotion, the average income, the average results...

If you want happiness and success, then spend more time with people who have it and less time with people who don't. In order to do this, you may need to expand your network:

  • Volunteer
  • Join a club
  • Get involved in groups

Adding new relationships can increase the level of your success and happiness.

2. They Listen to Others

Individuals who focus on and are truly concerned for others tend to be more successful and happy than those who are self-centered and selfish.

I heard a terrific quote once that really hammers this point home:

"A good listener may walk away from a conversation feeling as if their presence served a purpose, an experience that is closely connected with increased well-being."

3. They Don't Waste Time, But They Also 'Lose Track' of Time

timeSuccessful people spend less than one hour per day watching TV and less than one hour per day on the internet (recreationally). Unplugging can lead to increased happiness. Talking on your cell phone may increase your blood pressure, and uninterrupted screen time can cause depression and fatigue.  Yuck!

Spending less time 'plugged' in or 'tuned' in frees up more time to do things that really matter to you -- the type of activities that create 'flow' and help you feel as though you've lost track of time. Activities that require creativity, skill, are enjoyable and voluntary, are best suited to this purpose.

For many affluent people, this type of 'flow' also carries over into their work. Eighty-five percent of wealthy people like or love the work they do, and 75% believe that creativity is critical for success.

Lemme throw another pertinent quote at ya:

"When we are engaged in creative pursuits we are at our most human state. Human beings were intended to create; to turn thoughts into reality."

4. They Never Give Up

Happy and successful people never give up. Never.

Resilience, not happiness, is the opposite of depression.

Happy and successful people know how to bounce back from failure. They never quit, even if facing complete failure and financial bankruptcy. They are obsessed with achieving their dream or major life purpose.

As the Japanese proverb goes: "Fall seven times, and stand up eight."

So…

How will you begin cultivating the characteristics of happy and successful people?
