“To hell with [perceived] reality! I want to die in music, not in reason or in prose. People don’t deserve the restraint we show by not going into delirium in front of them. To hell with them!”
~Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894-1961)
Hailed the most influential writer of the 20th century.
Preston Ely here, and I was having dinner with a friend, ordering anything and everything I wanted off the menu with absolutely no regard for price (as usual). Apparently, something about the way I was dealing with the waiter caused my buddy to say something that totally floored me:
“You know what I’ve learned from you, Preston? You walk around as if the whole world belongs to you. As if it’s your world and other people are lucky to be in it.”
Lights went on. I mean, like…the lights at Wrigley Field.
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”
~Albert Einstein
Northern lights. Spotlights. Look, forget the lights.
A minor epiphany had just appeared out of nowhere.
I finally saw very clearly what the difference is between those who succeed and those who don’t.
Those who succeed feel like they are living in THEIR world. As if it was created with their best intentions in mind and arranged so that all their needs could be met.
Their reality is dominant. Other people are simply there to help them and to be loved by them.
Those who do not succeed feel as though they are living in someone ELSE’S world. As if it was created with someone ELSE’S best intentions in mind and arranged so that none of their needs will ever be fully met.
Other people’s realities are dominant. Other people are there to hold their hand and tell them what to do.
Consider these and drop ‘em.
--Do you go around bowing down to everyone else all day long?
--Do you consider yourself a “nice” person?
--Do people tend to take advantage of you?
--Do you feel inferior to most people?
--Do you see others as better than you or somehow more capable?
Drop your ego and answer these honestly.
If I had to guess, probably 99.9% of people would answer “no” to these questions. Which is interesting, because 95% of people do and believe ALL of these things.
Now, please keep in mind, in my opinion, being successful is NOT the most important thing in life...
Loving other people is.
I am merely pointing out that if your desire is to achieve financial success, you are going to have to change the way you view yourself in relation to the world.
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”
~George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)
Irish Dramatist & Socialist
