When and How Max Effort, Energy and Persistence Pays Off

persistence“Success requires first expending ten units of effort to produce one unit of results. Your momentum will then produce ten units of results with each unit of effort.”
~ Charles Givens

I remember reading somewhere that a jet uses about 90% of its fuel (energy) during the takeoff and rise to cruising altitude. It takes massive amounts of effort to get off the ground and climb to its intended heights. But at a certain point, it becomes easy and is able to simply cruise, not using much energy at all.

Hard at first. Easy at a certain point.

Hey Moguls, Preston Ely here…

Picture a big boulder… you’re trying hard to push it. It doesn’t budge. You hate the big boulder. But you keep trying because you are totally insane as far as anyone else can tell. It moves a little. The more it moves, the easier it becomes.

At some point, it takes on a life of its own and you can just jog next to it, give it a good slap every once in a while, and watch as it rolls down the road crushing huts and innocent villagers alike. After all, wherever there are big boulders, there must be huts and innocent villagers. Right?

Notice how strong you are now after all that pushing in the beginning. Hhmmm… maybe the next boulder will be easier now.

Pushing in the beginning is not that much fun. And by “is not that much fun” I mean to say, “sucks worse than anything could possibly suck on earth.” It takes massive amounts of motivation to stick with it when that rock doesn’t seem to budge at first.

You gotta really wanna move it. You gotta want it BAD.

Most people aren’t willing to push that dumb rock; even if it IS blocking the door to their personal happiness and ultimate destiny. Maybe they don’t fully realize what is waiting for them on the other side? Is lack of vision to blame?

Kinda Applicable Case Study That’s All About Me

I used to weigh 160 pounds or so. As an adult. When the wind blew, I got to take a break from walking and just float around with the breeze like a leaf. It was awesome.

But eventually, I got tired of being a human kite so I decided to become a muscle-bound freak.

So I went to work:

  • 12 egg whites and two bowls of oatmeal for breakfast
  • 2 chicken breasts and 2 baked potatoes for lunch
  • Same thing for dinner
  • 3 protein shakes with milk and bananas in between everything
  • 2 hours weightlifting in the gym each day
  • No steroids
  • No cardio

I kept this up for over a year.

I got up to 225 pounds. I could single-handedly crush huts and innocent villagers alike without even using a boulder.

steroidsBut you can only keep something like that up for so long. (After all, not doing steroids sucks. Just kidding. I never did them. I swear.)

Anyway, I no longer do those things...

It takes too much energy. I lift weights just a couple times a week (if that), eat like a bird (albeit a super sexy bird – like a flamingo) and do a lot of cardio (which causes you to lose a lot of weight and muscle).

However, I now stay at 200 pounds effortlessly.

And I look like a page out of Muscle Fitness. My biceps are as big as a baby’s head. I even tattooed a star on it to commemorate its bigness. I can peel potatoes with my abs if I want to. (And believe me, I want to.)

I barely have to even try to keep this shape. If I lose it by taking time off, I get it back instantly with just a couple workouts.

I paid my dues for a year or so with maximum effort, and now I reap the benefits for a lifetime, with minimal effort. Fit for life.

How This Relates to REI

This same thing applies with your real estate career…

It will require maximum amounts of effort, energy and persistence in the beginning, but if you hang in there (and most don’t), you will most certainly reap the rewards from the law of momentum.

Are you willing to pay the price?

Don’t be so quick to say yes.

Are you really willing? Are you sure?

It will be uncomfortable. And I know how you like comfort.

Are you really willing to suffer for a period of time for an ultimately greater good?

Okay, fine – I believe you. You’re willing.

Now get out there and prove it.
