The Power To Act

actionsDo it now. Seek forgiveness later.

“Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.”
          – Alfred Adler (1870-1937) Famous Psychologist who picked fights with Sigmund Freud

A good friend of mine was over for lunch yesterday. He was telling me his plans for a new business decision he was about to make. My nonchalant response without even looking up from what I was doing was simply “do it.”

He looked at me and said, “You know, probably the greatest thing I have learned from being around you is that you just-don’t-care.”

I knew exactly what he meant by that.

You see, there are two types of people in this world: Those who do. And those who don’t. One of those types of people you do not want to be.

Those who “don’t” simply think too much. They care too much. They talk themselves out of everything. They over-analyze. And that’s really all rooted in fear. Fear of losing control. Fear of looking stupid. Fear of looking intelligent. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of fear. Fear of mimes. Fear of me never actually making a good point in this whole entire article.

“I tell you something that every warrior has known since the beginning of time: Conquer your fear…and you will conquer death.”
– Alexander the Great (The one in the movie anyways)

meterSuccessful People Take Action RIGHT NOW

When my friend said that he respected the fact that I don’t “care,” he didn’t mean that I do not care about the outcome of events. I do care. I just don’t care too much. After all – what is the worst that can happen? I die? Big deal. I’m looking forward to that.

The next life will make this one look like a bad overnight stay at a roach motel that was lit on fire for the course of the night while you were forced to remain there with the firey flames eating through your flesh, and every once in a while someone handed you a bottle of water, and that was pretty cool, but then they either took it away just when it began helping or it somehow turned to gasoline and shot liquid fire into your esophagus, and Barbara Streisand was playing a live concert on the television in your room and it was impossible to turn it off, and that was worse than the fire.

Sorry. Every once in a while I have a spontaneous negative moment. Happens to the best of the best of us.

My point is simply this:

Barbara Streisand is really really painful to listen to. At least for me.

I just came up with the perfect illustration for this whole thing. Take this very lesson I am writing. It is absolutely insane. At the very least, I have ticked off a bunch of weird Streisand fans…  And, at the very worst, I have made my very own mother mad at me because now that I think about it, she is a weird Streisand fan (“For the love of money, will you please STOP talking about your mother you FREAK?!”)

Stop caring so much. Start doing. Stop planning so carefully. Just get the dang thing in motion and figure it out as you go along. It’ll be ok; I promise. The world won’t end.

“Fortune favors the bold.”
Virgil – Roman Epic Poet (70 BC – 19 BC)
